  Silver star
The Silver Star is awarded to America's service members who display distinguished gallantry and heroism. It is the third
highest military award for combat. Established in 1918 as the Citation Star, in 1932 it was redesignated as a medal with a
retroactive provision that allowed servicemen as far back as the Spanish-American War to receive it.

Reason for gallantry in action against an armed hostile force in the
Republic of Viet Nam. SP4 Roddie Perry distinguished himself by intrepid
actions on 23, Feb. 1969 while serving as a rifleman with company D, 4th
battalion, 3rd infantry. On the date the company was providing security
for LZ Buff when they came under intense enemy mortar and rocket fire,
and a ground assault on two perimeter bunkers. During the initial attack,
Specialist Perry moved across 200 meters of open terrain until he reached
one of the bunkers. he called for reinforcements and began to evacuate
his wounded comrades. Returning to the bunker SP 4 Perry spotted a
wounded fellow soldier tangled in the wire directly in front of the
emplacement. Despite enemy fire impacting all around him SP4 Perry moved
forward and carried his comrade to safety. As support troops arrived SP4
Perry joined in a successful counter attack. SP4 Perry's courageous
actions were directly instrumental in the successful defense of the
landing zone. Specialist 4 Perry's personal heroism, professional
competence and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest
tradition of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself,
the Americal Division and The United States Army.
